Fragmentary fresco depicting a female saint, possibly St Barbara, holding a tower with conical roof. In the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio, a Como-Romanesque church built in the second half of the 1100s at Gravedona in Lombardy, Italy.

Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio (St Mary of the Lime Tree), Gravedona, Province of Como, Lombardy, Italy: fragmentary fresco depicting a female saint, possibly St Barbara, holding a tower with a conical roof in her right hand and pointing with the index finger on her left. She stands under an arch with another figure lower left. In art, St Barbara is often depicted holding a tower to symbolise her imprisonment by her father. Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio is a Como Romanesque church built in the second half of the 12th century of white Musso marble and blackstone from Olcio. According to tradition, it owes its name to the lime tree grown in the bell tower or campanile. Santa Maria del Tiglio stands next to the parish church of San Vincenzo (Saint Vincent), near the shore of Lake Como. The lakeside land occupied by these churches was a sacred site from at least Roman times. The first Christian building here, a baptistery dedicated to St John the Baptist, was probably built over a pagan temple.
