The business was founded in1869 by Thomas Simpson andWilliam Oswald who bought outthe dry goods business of at 213 Essex street, andstarted under the firm name ofSimpson & Oswald. The concernsoon outgrew the original quarters,and it moved to the present loca-tion, taking in Nos. 229, 231 and2T^7^ of the present store. Additionswere later made, east and west, until the entire street floor of thepresent establishment was occupied. After a successful partnership of several years Mr. Simpsonwithdrew from the firm.
