Dortmund / Castrop-Rauxel, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Renaturation of the Emscher River, HRB Mengede flood control reservoir. A new floodplain

Dortmund / Castrop-Rauxel, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Renaturation of the Emscher River, HRB Mengede flood control reservoir. A new floodplain landscape for flood protection and biodiversity is being created at the Emscher-Auen farm. The Emscher, which is currently straightened, will regain its curves and be able to meander through its new floodplain. The Emscher has been completely free of sewage since 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
