On 3rd September 1939, the day the outbreak of the Second World War on the 3rd September 1939 was declared, a German U-boat torpedoed the "SS Athenia" in mid-Atlantic. Of the 1,000 plus passengers, including women and children, travelling from Belfast to Montreal, just 112 were rescued.
