The numberof slaves kept by the Por-tuguese inhabitants at Loanda, Colombo,St. Salvador, and, indeed, wherever theyhave settlements, is matter of just asto-nishment; middling pt-ople keep from 50to 200 each; several of the richest have3000; and one of the religious societiesat Loanda possesses more than 12,000, ofdifferent nations, comprising smiths, join-ers, turners, , and other handi-crafts.
