Hewas then on garrison duty in 1878, and transferred toTexas, where he served during 1879-S0. Then he wasdetailed for two years on recruiting service at New York. He was appointed major and paymaster July 5, 1882,and has served at different stations throughout thecountry, his present station (1891-92) being at Cincin-nati, Ohio. Porter was born in Chester,Pennsylvania, and, as a mere lad, accompanied his father,Captain David Porter, United States Navy, on a cruisein the West Indies for the suppression of piracy.
