Work began on the Wearmouth bridge in 1927 and it opened in 1929. It replaced the cast iron bridge that had first opened in 1796 and was at thetime the largest span iron bridge in the world. In 1857 work was needed to repair the iron bridge and the engineer Robert Stephenson completed a major rebuild by 1959. The railway bridge alongside it was completed in 1879 and is a Wrought Iron box girder bowstring bridge, it has a span of 300 feet and is 86 foot above high water.
