Timothy Nigel Peake (born 1972), British astronaut for the European Space Agency (ESA). Peake served in the British Army from 1992 to 2009. In 2009 he was a successful applicant for one of only six places on ESA's astronaut training programme. He graduated in November 2010, making him the first British citizen to be selected as an astronaut by ESA. Previous British astronauts in space have had US citizenship or flown privately. Peake was part of Expedition 46 to the International Space Station (ISS), transferring to Expedition 47 and spending just under 186 days in space from 15 December 2015 to 18 June 2016. Photographed in January 2017 with the Soyuz capsule (in background) that brought him back to Earth.
