The castle of Arañó or castell de l'Aranyó in Catalan and officially. L'Aranyó is a Spanish town belonging to the municipality of Plans d'El Sio, which is located in the region of La Segarra, in the province of Lérida. The castle is documented from the fourteenth century. Although the term of Arañó, appears documented already in the year 1120. In the year 1381 the castle belonged to the Montsuar nobles, in 1424 the domain passed to Arnau de Alta-riba and later to the Bourgeois and the Agulló. The building that we see today is the result of some reforms carried out in 1569 and that changed its original appearance, since it was reformed in such a way that it went from being a defense castle to being a residential castle or palace. In the 19th century, the castle was acquired by the family of the Catalan writer Manuel de Pedrolo, who was born in Arañó in 1918. Near the town there are two large rocks known as els pallers de pedra, the stone haystacks in Castilian, which are shaped like two piles of straw that farmers usually use to store straw and that it is clearly seen that they are a consequence of erosion . But there is a legend about them that says that one day a poor man showed up asking for shelter or at least a little straw to make a bed for him to spend the night. The people of the house denied him and then the beggar left the place cursing him and wishing that his haystacks would be petrified forever. The people of the surroundings still explain today that the haystacks were petrified because they did not want to welcome it.
