ABERNETHY, LORD S ALTO UN HE origin of the familyof Abernethy is Saltoun ^ gives it ashis opinion that in thetwelfth century its re-presentatives occupiedthe position of lay abbotsof the Ouldee monasteryof Abernethy, in Strath-earn, and that it maytherefore be concludedthat they were notamong the Saxon orNorman immigrants who,at various periods, en-tered Scotland from thesouth, but were de-scended from some ancient Pictish or Scottish source, orfrom some adventurous Scandinavian settler from the first of the family, however, found in historicalrecord is. Hugh, who lived during the reigns of Alexander i.,David I., and perhaps Malcolm the Maiden. He appears tohave died about the middle of the twelfth century.^ Hehad a son, Orm de Abernethy. He is styled son of Hugh, andprobably succeeded his father as Lay Abbot of the monas-tery.
