Fish scale fossil. Rock containing a fossil of a the skin of a Lepidotus gigas showing its scales. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen, which dates to the late Jurassic period (between 161 and 145 million years ago), measures 6 centimetres.
