The finest quality of wool is found upon the spine, from theneck to within six inches of the tail, including one-third of thebreadth of the back or saddle. The second quality covers theflanks, and extends from the thighs to the shoulders. A broad distinction is made in wools, which are divided bythe trade into long or combing wools, applicable for stuffs andworsted goods, and short or clothing wools for cloth former are, however, again sub-divided into wools of from CLASSIFICATION OF SHEEPS WOOL. 27 four to seven inches in length, used for hosiery and some otherpurposes, and those above that length used principally for coarseworsted goods. Specimens of the spinning processes of worstedyarns are well worth notice, showing that 89,000 yards may bespun to the pound weight, which is a great effort for worstedyarn.
