In a large manufactory ofanimal charcoal in this metropolis, the shape of the retort is that of aright rectangidar prism ; its height being twenty feet, its length aboutthree feet, and its breadth two feet. It is closed at the top by amoveable iron plate, secured by a screw bolt. It is closed belowby a double trapdoor opening underground.
