St. Nicholas: A day or two ago, at the WhiteMountains, my father, brother, and I were sitting on a highbank overlooking the Intervale of the Saco. As it waslate in the afternoon, we could see our shadows on theground below. My father asked us to see the bright lightaround the head of his shadow. Why, no ! Aroundmine, said my brother. I could see just as clearly a lightabout the head and shoulders of my shadow and nobody-elses. My father remembered having heard of this effect ofhalos being seen toward sunset, especially on low, marshyground. I wonder if any of your other readers have everobserved it ? Sincerely yours,
