Earl of Meirionnydd at Porthmadog Station, Wales, UK: a modern-day Double Fairlie steam engine built 1979 at Boston Lodge, run on the Ffestiniog Railway. A steam-hauled narrow-gauge railway built in 1830 to transport slate the miles from the Blaenau Ffestiniog quarries down to the quay at Porthmadog, & take workers & equipment in both directions. This photo taken in 1999, in 2006 the engine was converted to coal firing & was taken out of service Sunday 8 April 2018 prior to the expiry of her boiler ticket. Currently awaiting/undergoing overhaul. The cuboid side tanks deviate from the original C19th Fairlie's Patent design. Ffestiniog Railway is part of The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales which became the UK's 32nd UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.
