The first water-works were commenced in 1799. A steam-enginewas placed in Chestnut street, near the Schuylkill, by means ofwhich the water was elevated to a basin in Penn square, and fromthence distributed to the city in wooden pipes. The quantity ofwater thus obtained was soon found to be entirely too small to supplythe increasing demand, and the works were abandoned in 1815, afternearly $700,000 had been spent upon them.
