Mount Elbrus volcano (5642 metres), Russia, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). This is the highest mountain in Europe. There are two volcanic peaks, one at centre and the other to the left. The summit calderas (craters) can just be seen under the snow, and are 300-400 metres across. The mountain is covered in snow and ice (white), with glaciers flowing off the slopes (several seen at upper left). Mount Elbrus, part of the Caucasus Mountains between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea, has not erupted for over 2000 years. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres.
