King Boleslaw Chrobry founded the original St Gereon's Church on the site circa 1020. This was replaced by a Romanesque Church of Our Lady Mary in the 12 th century. After being burnt down in 1305, the present Gothic Cathedral was built. This was added to over the years, a major reconstruction having been carried out under King Alexander Jagiellonczyk in the early 16 th century, when a number of chapels were added. It is the coronation and burial place of Polish monarchs. The Zygmunt Sigismund Bell weighs 11 tonnes and is the largest historic bell in Poland
