A fortnight or three weeks generallyelapse before the insect within thecocoon is changed into a ; butno sooner is it completely formed, than, having divested itself of itsaurelia skin, it prepares to burst through its prison. For this purposeit extends its head towards the point of the cocoon, and gnaws apassage through its cell, small at first, but enlarging as the animalincreases its efforts for emancipation.
