Domes at Herstmonceux Observatory, formerly part of the Royal Greenwich Observatory
The Royal Greenwich Observatory was founded in Greenwich in 1675 by King Charles II but was moved just after the second world war in order to escape the lights and pollution of the city. The site at Herstmonceux was chosen as the most suitable in the UK. During its days at Herstmonceux the RGS built up an enviable reputation for world-class astonomical research. Each year nearby Herstmonceux Castle was the venue for a major conference attracting top astronomers from all over the world. It was also where the famous six 'time-pips' came from which were used by the BBC for broadcast.
