Boletus fungus. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from the fruiting body of a Boletus sp. mushroom, showing the hymenium (dark red) of the fruiting body, with basidia and basidiospores (round, pink-red). The Boletus has tubes which lead to pores on the underside of the cap, this image shows the tubular wall made up of hyphae (light pink) that lead to the inside of the tube, the hymenium. The hymenium is made up of basidia. Each basidium ends in four sterigma each bearing one basidiospore. The basidia, shoot the basidiospores, into the tube and out of the pore, where air currents disperse them. Magnification: x70 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
