Remains of the SS Lawrence which foundered in heavy seas at Mokihinui, Buller, on 28th April 1891. The wreck can still be seen at low tide. The ship ran aground in very heavy seas at the river mouth. she eventually broke free but as he suffered propellor blades and drifted onto the beach. The next day she broke her back and was declared lost. She was insured for GBP2000. Hew loss hastened the end of the fledgling Mokihinui Coal Company.
