We took rickshaws to the foot ofthe mountain, when most of the party made the ascenton foot, but two of us took chairs. It was a steepclimb. Had it not been for the evident discomfort ofthe chair-bearers, we should have enjoyed this methodof travel; but when one sees on the backs of the menthe cruel marks made by the crosspieces which rest ontheir shoulders, ones pleasure is somewhat lessened.
