HEALS light therapy. Nurse using a WARP 75 light therapy device to treat the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in a cancer patient. Called HEALS (High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate), this technology uses 288 powerful light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to provide intense amounts of light at a wavelength of 670 nanometres. HEALS light therapy was developed from experiments carried out on the International Space Station. This photograph, published in 2011, is from a trial taking place at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, Alabama, USA.
