Elephants are taken to the river for a bath at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. For the conscious visitor, a strange and uncomfortable feeling arises during the visit, as it can be easily mistaken with a zoo or a profitable business, which makes it hardly recommendable. Some animal welfare associations, such as Born Free, and elephant experts show strong disagreement with the management and request changes in the level of care, with concerns about chaining, transfers, breeding and the encouragement of visitors by the keepers to have direct contact with the animals, mainly motivated by the exchange of tips and not always positive for the elephant´s wellbeing.
