February 19, father and mother, who belonged to thetheatrical profession, botli died about thesame time, leaving three children, one ofwhom, Edgar, the second child, was adoptedby John Allan, of Richmond, who, being inwealthy circumstances, gave the boy goodeducational advantages. At the age of sevenhe was sent to a school in England, nearLondon. Returning at the age of thirteen, he pursuedhis studies at home, under private instruc-tors, until he was seventeen years old, whenhe entered the University of Virginia, atCharlottesville. He was a bright student, buthis love of gambling and dissipation causedhim to leave his school at the end of twelvemonths, after which he remained at home threeor four years.
