To this there is to be opposed theantagonistic mediaeval art, its special reaction towards classicalinfluences under the guise of the late Renaissance, and thosedemocratic motives which are coextensive with the spread ofProtestant ideas. Art is the material representative of the ideal, whether it beon a spiritual, intellectual, or sensual basis. Hence, to predicateof the art of an epoch we have first to get a clear vision of itsimmediate passion, or what it most covets. The basis, there-fore,
