The latter is fitted with screw cuttingand taper attachments. For bar work it is equipped with adraw-back automatic chuck and tor chucking work, with athree-jaw geared scroll chuck. The head and the bed are cast integral. The bed is shortand heavily ribbed with carriage ways of the V-type, havinga large liearmg area. The head is of the geared type, being. Foster Type 1-B Universal Turret Lathe for Bar and ChuckingVl/ork driven by a single pulley, the shaft of which is mounted inphosphor bronze Twelve speed changes are obtainedin either direction, by sliding gears controlled by leversmounted on the top of the head casing. All gears are heattreated and hardened. They are of the stub tooth form, which gives strength and quiet operation. The gears in thehead run in a bath of oil. The friction clutch is designedto transmit power in excess of the greatest amount that canbe delivered bv the \x\t. The spindle is made from a high carbon machine steelforging and runs in extra long bronze boxes. There aretwelve spindle speeds ranging from 20 to 480 , whichmakes it possible to secure the proper cutting speed for allclasses of material within the limits of the size of work themachine will handle. The gear box on the end of the headcontains the gears through which the feed rod for the toolsis driven, and also carries part of the mechani
