Theboy and his charge are close in the foreground, the cow lowering herhead toward the roadside grass, coming toward the spectator. Amass of low trees bounds the distance on the right, and toward theleft—beyond a single distant church that rises against the horizon—all is flat land as far as eye can see. The reflections of boats and buildings enrichthe water with deep notes of color, while the blue, and the white clouds,of the sky, brighten it. At the left, on the land, what appears to bethe large, grayish-white pile of a cathedral overtowers the other build-ings of the city. Signed at the lower right, J. Maris.
