Portrait of a boy toddler standing in the open doorway of a tin shack in the townships of Grahamstown, South Africa

From the window of the car driven by my guide, I caught this boy toddler standing in the doorway of an informal township house, looking anxiously at his mother after being left with his grandma. In the ceiling behind the boy a solitary electric lightbulb hangs over a wooden chair, by a curtain dividing up the sparse interior. An increasing number of affluent houses is changing the traditional tin shack view of South african townships.
