BY JACK PHILLIPS, AGE 13. vvhile Jack reefed the sail, Dick cleared the boat. By thetime they had finished their preparations, and had donnedsouwesters and life-preservers, the whole sky was over-cast, making it seem like twilight, though it was onlyten in the ^morning. The thunder rumbled along untilit burst in ear-splitting crashes, then died slowly away ;forked lightning flashed and flickered over the darkenedheavens; the wind became colder and stronger; and therain came down in torrents, cold and stinging, like and higher rose the white-capped waves, andstill the Marigold sped swiftly on. The boys had no fear of their boat capsizing, but theydid fear other and larger boats coming down on as Dick expressed this fear, the sound of a fog-horncame out of the thick bank of rain, almost on top of them.
