An 1842 caricature portrait of the singer Lablache singing at her Majesty's theatre , London, England in 1842. Luigi Lablache ( 1794 – 1858) was an Italian opera singer of French and Irish ancestry. He was most noted for his comic performances and his acting. In his younger days he studied singing & violin. He was originally a contralto but developed a a powerful & agile bass voice. The opera Elisa e Claudio was especially written for him in 1821 by Saverio Mercadante. Interestingly, the film actor Stewart Granger was his great-great-grandson
