Nor was he more fortunate,in 1799, when he was employed in Hol-land ; he being under the necessity of sia;n-iiig a disadvantageous convention. Hisolfice of commander in chief, to which he was appointed in 1795, he resigned in1809, in consequence of the charges whichwere brought against him by ColonelWardle. He was, however, reinstated bythe prince regent, and held it till his de-cease, on the 5th of January, 1S27. It isbut justice to say that he administered itin a manner which was highly beneficial tothe army. YORKE. Hewas designed for the law, and took hisdegree of doctor, but he at length chosethe clerical profession, and, in 1723, wasordained, and appointed chaplain to theking. His poetical reputation he hadalreadj established by the poems of TheLast Day, The Force of Religion, and TheLove of Fame; and the tragedies of TheRevenge, and Busiris. In 1730 he ob-tained the living of Welwyn, and thoughfor several years he (to use his own words)besieged court favour, he received nofurther church promotion. His NightThoughts are supposed to have beenprompted by the death of his wife, whomhe lost in 1741. He died in 1765.
