Ceramic Head planter, a popular ornament in Sicily, Italy

Typical pottery items to be found in Sicily. These are made of Terracotta and will be found on balconies and in gardens. The heads commemorate the story of a beautiful maiden in Palermo who was sitting by her window when she was noticed by an Arab nobleman. She was forced to marry him but on their wedding night she cut off his head and filled his skull with the plant basil. The story became a symbol of freedom from Sicily's many invaders and they are to be found everywhere, male and female heads with plants in them.
