Eli Thayer in 1848. MISCELLANEOUS. ANY of the old buildings of historic ititerest havebeen removed within the last quarter of a centuryso that little now remains of the Worcester of thepast. One after another have succumbedio theinevitable, and at last the most familiar andcherished landmark, the Old South Church, stand-ing in the way of improvement, has passed fromsight. This church edifice was erected in 1763 ; itWas seventy feet long and fifty wide, with a tower on the north end, sur-mounted by a steeple one hundred and thirty feet high. The principal en-trance was on Main street, through a porch, but in 1827 this entrance wasclosed, the porch removed, and an entrance made through the tower and the. square pews and ancient pulpit were removed. In 1886 the rigiits of theFirst Parish in the common were transferred to the city, suhjcct to award ofdamages by legal authority, and the meeting-house was sold at auction for$320 and torn down, tlieparish receiving an awardof $148,400 damages. The first county courthouse was built in 1732-3on the site where the pres-ent court house now location has alwaysbeen styled Court Jennison gave theland, and the building wasput up in 1733.
