Kimogue Portal Tomb, Carlow, County Kilkenny, Eire

Exceptional example of large megalithic tomb known as a Portal Tomb. Two tall portal stones form the entrance to a stone lined burial chamber. The larger of the 2 stones lies at a steep angle. A cairn or mound of stones would have once covered most of the tomb, but the capstone probably remained visible. Known locally as Leac an Scail, the tomb is sited on flat pasture land above the head waters of a tributary of the river Suir. Probably built in Neolithic times about 6000, six thousand, years ago for the burial of important members of the community and perhaps to be a focal point for a group or tribe. Kilmogue from the Gaelic language, Cill Mhog or Church of Mog
