Tynemouth Priory and Castle Tyne and Wear England
Site of early Christian monastery in the 7th Century. St Oswin the murdered king of Deira is believed to have been buried here in 651. The monastery was plundered by Danish raiders in 800 and eventually destroyed in 875. It was refounded as a Benedictine priory dependant on St Albans Abbey and survived until the dissolution of 1539. The present buildings date from 1090 and were developed within the castle enclosure which protects the landward side of the headland. They were enlarged from ca 1195 to 1220 in a characteristically northern Early English style. The Presbytery begun in the 1190's still stands to nearly its full original height at 73 feet or 22m.
