Henri Giffard. Historical portrait of the French engineer Henri Giffard (1825-1882). Giffard was the inventor of the first passenger-carrying and steerable airship in 1852. It was 43 metres long and was called a dirigible. It was filled with hydrogen and flew at about 5 kilometres per hour. Engraving by Deveaux from 1863.
