For the yoke chemise we now cut the breadthsapart at the top, and gather them, leaving a dis-tance of two or three inches plain at each end,to receive the shoulder-piece, 7, Fig. 2. Theseshoulder-pieces are cut double, the longest partthe long way of the material, hollowed towardthe sleeve a little, and still more toward theneck, and are united to the body of the chemiseby the yoke, which is only a straight strip, 6; a slit8 is made in the front of the garment, and a but-ton and button-hole are required, or two button-holes, if a stud is used. There are many other i UNDERGARMENTS 549 ways of making a yoke, which will readily sug-gest themselves to the reader; but we havepreferred this, as it is the simplest and thesurest to fit Fig. 2. The puffed sleeves are made by taking astraight strip, not over four inches deep and athird longer than the length of the arm must be cut out a little under the arms, and have gussets or gores, as shown in the fig-ure, and be gathered into bindings whose lengthis determined by the measure of the arm. The sacque differs from the yoke-chemise inthe manner in which the neck is finished off,and it may have also a plainer sleeve. In is shown the manner of cutting the garmentout in the neck. It will be seen that, insteadof receiving shoulder-pieces, the chemise is leftwhole on the shoulder, and cut out to a consid-erable distance below for the neck.
