The principal feature of interest in a machine of this capacityrevolving at a high speed is the rotating part, and the appendedillustration showing the completed rotor gives a good idea ofthe construction. In this rotor the windings arecarried in closed slots so as to avoid the use of wedges or otherloose parts. .Vt the ends of the rotor windings aresupported by massive rings on the outside, whereas on theinside they are freely exposed to the air in order to ensureproper cooling. The distribution of the winding in a largenumber of slots not only ensures that the stresses are low,but also ensures that tlic exciting coils are provified with ample. ^i-A Stater of Curtis Turbo-Alternator. Img space. Tn order to facilitate transport and to allow. dismantling to be effected, the stator has been made in parts. I he generator has two bearings which are independent ofturbine bearings, and being driven through a llcxiblepling it is capable of nmning satisfactorilv, even wheniilly out of alignment. This is an important point in bigluncs where heavy weights may cause slight settlement■lie foundations. The exciter is driven through a flexiblecoupling contained within the alternator inain liearingiMne and is also indci>cndent of exact alignment. Vcntila-:i is effected without the of anv external fans, the rotorli acting as a very efficient blower. The air for coolingpurposes is led through ducts in the and afteriirculating through the machine is expelled through an open-ling in the top of the stator frame. This frame is providedwith |) steel panels which can be readily taken off toallow acces
