Cherokee was the first test detonation of the United States' first air deliverable thermonuclear weapon and was part of Operation Redwing, a series of 17 nuclear test detonations carried out from May to July 1956. The smoke trails (horizontal) seen here are from rockets fired to obtain blast data.
