An epidemic of influenza, worse than that of a year ago last fall, has caused an abnormal demand for flowers of all kinds and everything else has given way to a rush of funeral and hospital work. With an unprecedented shortage of stock that would be felt under normal conditions, it is difficult to take care of orders that pile up daily. The whole- salers meet less than half of the calls for stock. The retailers manage, by economy, ingenuity and rare good luck, to get by, wondering at the close of each day how they did it and how they will manage the next. It is a trying time for wholesalers when florists in all parts of the country are writing, wiring, calling by long dis- tance telephone for flowers at any price. to have to turn them down for want oi stock. They all do it time after time each day. What stock there is goes to regular customers flrst and this has to be apportioned so that everybody geta a little.
