A German Baroque war chest, probably Nuremberg, circa 1760 Rectangular body of sheet iron, the corners embellished with pilasters topped by composite capitals. Stepped base plate on wooden socle. Two folding handles at sides. Slightly domed lid surrounded by a robust trim. Lock cover with secret mechanism and applied relief of a bronze lion, at side two riveted ornamental rosettes. Elaborate, finely polished closing mechanism with sixteen tumblers (one latch damaged) and applied blossom-shaped brass rosettes.
