This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Sentinel-1 satellite in orbit. Computer artwork of ESA's (European Space Agency) Sentinel-1 satellite in Earth orbit. The Sentinel-1 mission is part of the Copernicus programme, formerly Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES). It consists of two identical satellites simultaneously orbiting the earth and providing continuous imagery of all Earth's land surfaces. Sentinel-1A was launched 3 April 2014 and Sentinel-1B is due to be launched in 2016. The satellites carry Synthetic Aperture Radar in C-band that provide continuous imagery in day, night and all weathers. They monitor sea-ice zones and the Arctic environment, mapping land surfaces, and provide mapping in support of humanitarian aid in crisis situations.
