Blast furnace. These are the Everett Iron Company furnaces, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, USA. Built in 1883, the building seen here includes changes from an early 20th-century rebuild. Dating from 1934, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
