Bluebottle (Calliphora vomitoria) fly on the spadix (dark coloured, central spike) of a voodoo lily (Sauromatum venosum). This plant emits a foul stench of rotting flesh from the spadix, to attract flies in order to aid pollination. The spathe (red and yellow) is a modified leaf that mimics the appearance of decaying flesh. The flowers are present only as a cluster of tiny pale yellow florets at the base of the spadix.
