The colour of the membrane is ?dark, full-bodied gray (yellowish-gray in the case of exudation), mixed witha violet or reddish tinge, dependent on the intensity of the redness of theinner wall of the tympanic cavity shining through. After a long duration of the catarrh, partial thinning of the membrane inone or more places frequently takes place, rarely in the anterior half, oftener inthe posterior half.
