The neuroglia is very rich in nuclei, which, retaining some of the stain after differentiation by the methodof Pal, give to the ground substance in the Weigert sections a gran-ular appearance under a lower power; by this appearance the pres-ence of the disease in the pntamen may often be detected before the. Another indication of themorbid process in Weigert sections is the presence of pigment gran-ules. This pigment is not observed in the left putamen. Before the appearance of the ansa, as in Fig. 6, there are still anumber of fiber bundles in the putamen which contain the paler, finer fibers as well as darker ones; but after this the degeneration ofthe fibers becomes more extensive and more intense, the finer fibersseeming to disappear first, for what is left of a bundle is always com-posed of thicker, darkly-stained fibers. io6 L.
