Chloroplast structures. Cutaway artwork showing the internal structure of a chloroplast, the organelle in plant cells responsible for photosynthesis. The outer and inner membranes (blue) enclose disc-shaped structures called thylakoids (green) that form both grana (stacks) and lamellae (flat planes). It is the thykaloids that are the site of photosynthesis, the capturing of energy from sunlight using the green pigment chlorophyll. Other structures are ribosomes (brown), a starch grain (yellow) and lipid globules (orange). The red loop is plastidial DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which produces the proteins for photosynthesis.
