Strontium optical lattice clock research. A researcher aligns a laser beam in research on a new generation of atomic clocks applying optical lattice technology. Inside a strontium clock is an ion trap, where strontium ions oscillate between two energy levels in response to the light of a laser beam. Counting such oscillations is the basis for defining the standard second. Strontium optical clocks are faster and more accurate than earlier atomic clocks. Photographed at the Foucault laboratory, SYRTE (Space-Time Reference Systems), Observatoire de Paris, France.
